The End of an Era. A Tribute to the Space Shuttles. One of the finest piece of machinery human being ever made.

Thousands of NASA Kennedy Space Center employees stand side-by-side to form a full-scale outline of a space shuttle orbiter outside the Vehicle Assembly Building on March 18, 2011.

The Space Shuttle orbiter is the orbital spacecraft of the Space Shuttle program operated by NASA, the space agency of the United States. The orbiter is a reusable winged "space-plane", a mixture of rockets, spacecraft, and aircraft.

A total of seven (six Orbiters & one simulator) were ever made - Pathfinder, Enterprise, Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour. Individual Space Shuttle orbiters are named in honor of antique sailing ships of the navies of the world, and they are also numbered using the NASA Orbiter Vehicle Designation system. All were built by the southern California based Rockwell International company.

Pathfinder (honorary Orbiter Vehicle Designation: OV-098) is a Space Shuttle test simulator made of steel and wood. The simulator was used in activities such as checking roadway clearances, crane capabilities and fits within structures. It was later shipped by barge to the Kennedy Space Center and was used for ground crew testing in the Vehicle Assembly Building, Orbiter Processing Facility, and Shuttle Landing Facility. It is presently on display at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

Enterprise (NASA Orbiter Vehicle Designation: OV-101) was the first Space Shuttle orbiter. It was named after the Starship Enterprise, featured on the television show Star Trek. It was built for NASA as part of the Space Shuttle program to perform test flights in the atmosphere. It was constructed without engines or a functional heat shield, and was therefore not capable of spaceflight.

Columbia (NASA Orbiter Vehicle Designation: OV-102) was the first spaceworthy Space Shuttle in NASA's orbital fleet. First launched on the STS-1 mission, the first of the Space Shuttle program, it completed 27 missions before being destroyed during re-entry on February 1, 2003 near the end of its 28th, STS-107. All seven crew members were killed.

Challenger (NASA Orbiter Vehicle Designation: OV-099) was NASA's second Space Shuttle orbiter to be put into service, Columbia having been the first. Its maiden flight was on April 4, 1983, and it completed nine missions before breaking apart 73 seconds after the launch of its tenth mission, STS-51-L on January 28, 1986, resulting in the death of all seven crew members.

Discovery (Orbiter Vehicle Designation: OV-103) was one of the orbiters of the Space Shuttle program of NASA, the space agency of the United States, and was operational from its maiden flight, STS-41-D on August 30, 1984, until its final landing during STS-133 on March 9, 2011. Prior to its retirement, Discovery was NASA's Orbiter Fleet leader, having flown 39 successful missions during over 27 years of service. In 1984, Discovery became the third operational orbiter following Columbia and Challenger.

Atlantis (Orbiter Vehicle Designation: OV-104) is the last Space Shuttle orbiters in the Space Shuttle fleet belonging to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the spaceflight and space exploration agency of the United States (the other operational Space Shuttle being Endeavour). The Atlantis was the fourth operational (and the next-to-the-last) Space Shuttle to be constructed by the Rockwell International company in Southern California, and it was delivered to the John F. Kennedy Space Center in eastern Florida in April 1985.

Endeavour (Orbiter Vehicle Designation: OV-105) is one of two currently operational orbiters in the Space Shuttle fleet of NASA, the space agency of the United States. (The other is Atlantis.) Endeavour is the fifth and final spaceworthy NASA space shuttle to be built, constructed as a replacement for Challenger. Endeavour first flew in May 1992 on mission STS-49 and was scheduled for decommissioning in 2010. Before its decommissioning, NASA expects to use Endeavour for the STS-134 mission. Its STS-134 mission was originally thought as the final mission of the Space Shuttle program, however, the proposed STS-135 mission was approved, and now Atlantis will be the final Space Shuttle to fly.

Issue

Photoshop CS5 crashes when you select or use the text tool, work in an image, or save an image.

Solution

Reset Photoshop's Preferences and turn off the Font Preview Preferences:

Quit Photoshop.
Restart Photoshop, while holding down the Command+Option+Shift keys). Then, click Yes to the message, "Delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings file?"
Choose Photoshop > Preferences > Type.
Deselect Font Preview Size and click OK.
Restart Photoshop.

Additional information

These issues occur when at least one of your South Asian language fonts doesn't have an English name. Fonts that do not contain English glyphs can cause problems, such as crashes, in Photoshop. Turning off the font preview in Photoshop prevents those crashes.

According to legend, George Clinton, under the influence of LSD, told Eddie Hazel during the recording session to imagine he had been told his mother was dead. The result was the 10-minute guitar solo for which Hazel is most fondly remembered by many music critics and fans.

This guitar solo will blow your mind and give you goose bumps and if it doesn't then seriously there is something wrong with you. This is one of the best solo I every heard. The last time I heard it was back in school and forgot all about it until recently when I was watching "House". So enjoy!!!

So one of my colleague (Sazzad Rafique) was sharing his experience of Augmented Reality at the Lego store in New York city called "Lego Digital Box". Basically when you place a box of Lego in front of the camera it reads the barcode on the box and displays three dimensional model of what can be made from that box of blocks on the screen.

So this made me think of an idea. I'm sure someone somewhere already thought of this but it would be really cool if there was something like "Lego Digital Box" for clothing stores. You go to a shop pick up couple of khakis and t-shirts. Stand in front of the camera that scans your body and the barcodes on the khakis and t-shirts. Voilà! the screen will display a three dimensional model of you wearing those clothes. This will help you judge how the clothes looks on you, if it fits perfectly or not, stop skin and other diseases by wearing the same clothes worn by others, help people who have hyper-concern over personal hygiene & germs and my personal favorite no more trialing for clothes, I'm super lazy :)

This will also help cut down the workforce, as the clothes doesn't need to be folded and stacked on the shelves over and over, thus saving money...

Da Old Ticker

I think lot of you already know that my old ticker and I are not getting along for the last couple of weeks, it's not cooperating with me.

What my old ticker has is a condition called PVC, Premature Ventricular Contraction, it's a type of Cardiac Arrhythmia. Enough mambo jambo, it basically cause uneven heartbeat, palpitation, chest pain, shortness of breath and oh yes skip/drop beat.

So the past couple of weeks Doc Emmett Brown run all kinda test possible - ECG, Echo, ETT, TSH, Lipid Profile, Holter monitor etc. All the results are pretty much positive beside Holter, which shows approximately 1466 skip/drop beats over 24 hours.

Doc thinks this condition might be benign and will eventually disappear in a month or two, if I continue taking the medications and follow his rules. The cause of this condition is my unhealthy way of living. So I have to go to a dietitian for dietary guidelines, exercise, avoid stress, hypertension, insomnia, caffeine, nicotine, alcohol and other drugs. He also ensured that if I don't follow these rules then I will be back there in no time and it wont be an easy getaway next time.

So everyone take care of your old ticker or get prepared to curse its sudden but inevitable betrayal!

I haven't wrote anything about "The King", didn't know what to write. Everyone already know what he did, achieved and gave. So what I'll do is share what I remember of him.

There are few things in life that you always remember. One of those thing was my cousins stereo system, I would have done anything to have it then, it was mind blowing. He was a huge fan of Michael Jackson and that's how I started listening to "The King". I'm also pretty sure that the first song I ever heard coming out of nursery rhymes was "Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough".

You know how your parents talk about the great musician of their era (John Lennon, Elvis Presley, Miles Davis) and how music will never be the same without them. Well Michael was ours and its a pleasure to be a part of his era.

Being a Knopfler fan I heard almost all his works. One of his finest I should say is the soundtrack he made for this 1983 Scottish film "Local Hero". You can listen to the music over and over again. So I looked it up in IMDb and found the story to be rather intriguing. After looking for the movie for over a month I finally found it, downloaded it and saw it last night and I’m glad I did.

American oil giant "Knox" sets out to acquire this small beautiful fishing town in Scotland, where they want to set up their new oil refinery. "Mac" MacIntyre their hot-shot executive is sent over to negotiate with the towns people, who love his Porsche and his 85K salary. Little does he know that instead of buying them off, he will start cherishing them, their town, their way of life......

If you like classic movies this is a must see. The story is bound to touch your heart and off course the amazing music that adds another dimension to the story.

Form follows function

Its really shocking that educated people at this era thinks "Form follows function" is gibberish. I'm not saying that I understand all of it but at least I'm not dumb enough to say that its gibberish and have the curiosity to learn about it.

Just in case you don't know what that means -
"Form follows function is a principle associated with modern architecture and industrial design in the 20th Century, which states that the shape of a building or object should be predicated by or based upon its intended function or purpose."

Anyway it's been used worldwide, from designing a simple website to a complex space shuttle. Before building something doesn't matter what it is, it can even be a paper plane, you have to know the function or purpose of the entity. Its not rocket science is it? If you fail to understand the purpose of the entity you are building the entity is ought to be a complete failure at the end of the day.

Between the purpose of a paper plane is to glide when you release it from your hand, the more it glides the better your design is. Just in case some of you don't have enough brain power to figure that out.

Letters from Iwo Jima

I like Clint Eastwood as an actor but as a director I truly had doubts. His first directed movie I saw was "A Perfect World", I think it is a great movie. But since then he started making movies that are shallow, dramatic and somewhat pointless, at least I think so.

For the last couple of weeks I started watching any war movie I can get my hands on. I was almost out of it when a friend of mine suggested a movie about the battle of Iwo Jima WWII - "Letters from Iwo Jima". It is without a shadow of a doubt a cinematic marvel and by far the finest piece of work from Eastwood.

Lieutenant General Tadamichi Kuribayashi (played by Ken Watanabe)

The movie is based on the Pacific Campaign of World War II 1945. The last stand of the outnumbered Imperial Japanese Army lead by Lieutenant General Tadamichi Kuribayashi (played by Ken Watanabe) against the United States on the island of Iwo Jima located 1,200 kilometers south of mainland Tokyo.

I'm a great admirer of Japanese honor, pride, glory, code and ethics. If someone saw "The Last Samurai" they will understand what I'm talking about. Ken Watanabe did an outstanding job in both the movies to show what Japanese honor is. The music is overwhelming it gives the exact amount of profundity the movie needs. Eastwood was right on target in every aspect of the movie.

We all know that soldiers of Allied Forces fought for survival and for the greater good of humanity but the question is will the soldiers of Axis Alliances be forgotten and will always be remembered as evil just because of their fascist leaders?

Our world is going through a rather harsh and disturbing time. Doesn’t matter how well off you are and you think it’s not your headache but the fact is at the end of the day it’s really hard to ignore the things that are happening around you. “Human beings are the finest and highest creation of God, we are the only intelligent life form in this entire cosmos” as said by the follower of God and yet we still struggle to measure up as finest creation. If we are the finest and we are alone why are we killing ourselves? Why can’t we leave in peace and stop fighting over insignificant things? Why can’t we help each other instead of drawing ourselves towards extinction? I believe the unfair concentration of power and wealth among a small segment of society that controls capital and creates an unequal society is the greatest cause of everything. Also religion is an extremely powerful thing and a group of politically cunning theist are using that in their favor to control the rest of the world. I believe the next step of human evolution is to get out of these religious idiocy, racial discrimination and imaginary boundaries. If we can’t do that than maybe our extinction is inevitable.

I was reading about Socialism for the past few days and I was really amazed how much the views I have matches with Socialism. Every time we talk about Socialism or Communism, the first thing that come across our mind are the wars but you have to understand that it’s not the ideology that caused the war, it’s the evil inside us that failed us in the past to carry out the ideology. A huge percentage of the world’s population fails to fulfill their basic necessity every day, they go to sleep at night without food and without shelter. Human civilization is like a huge engine, it won’t function properly until all the parts are working, even the tiniest one. A small percentage of the world’s population holds the fate of the rest of the world. We have to think for those who can’t think for themselves. If we are blessed than why can’t we share our blessings? If we can’t do that than how are we the finest? We have to come out of our imaginary boundaries and unite ourselves in order to end the chaos that we are in. We are not citizens of a country, we are citizens of this world. A world which was never meant to be divided.

I believe this Capitalist Democracy won’t work. We can’t take opinion from those who only think for themselves or those who are not capable and doesn’t know what’s good and what’s bad for them and others. A strong leader have to arise in order to convey the message to the people of this world. A message which clearly states that “We are one race, human and this is our world”.

High Hopes

Well everyone who know me knows that I'm a Pink Floyd addict and to me David Gilmour is god. Its really impossible to choose a song from all those amazing, remarkable, marvelous master pieces they gave us over decades. So today I'm just gonna talk about one of my all time favorite, a song which I just can't stop listening, a song which I can't have enough of. Its like my kryptonite, freezes me down every single time I listen to it.

"High Hopes" is a song from the 1994 Pink Floyd album, The Division Bell, written by David Gilmour and Polly Samson. Its lyrics speak of the things one may have gained and lost in life and also an autobiographical flair to it for Gilmour. It was the last song recorded for the album and was practically completed in a day. Its hard to explain how you feel when you listen to something extraordinarily unique but I will give it a shot.

Well the lyrics have a very pure, green, divine feeling to it. Some also says that Gilmour is talking about the other side but I don't think so. The calming music just add another dimension to it. It has a versatility in it, depends on your mood how you are feeling right that moment. The structure of the music the changes just makes you feel like flying. The more you listen the more you get connected to the song and the more you can connect yourself to it. As I said earlier it gives you a divining peace. The two minutes plus lead at the end of the song which starts around 5:15 is the best lead I heard in my whole life (Lead from "Time" and "Comfortably Numb" are also tremendous).

"High Hopes was really the last one, it was written after all the other (songs) were sort of, in some form or another. I think I wrote it in July or something. It was very, very quick. It's one of those ones that works, quickly, but beautifully, almost immediately and, I came up with a tiny bit of music, just had it on a cassette, just a few bars of piano. And then I went off to get away to a small house somewhere with my girlfriend, Polly, and try and make some progress on the lyric writing. And she gave me a phrase about something about before time wears you down. And I took it from there, and...got stuck into a whole sort of thing about, I suppose, my, it's autobiographical really, I suppose I'd have to say on that one, it's about my life, Cambridge life, and my childhood, I suppose. Yeah, we came up with it very, very quickly, we wrote the words to it in, most of the words to it in a day. And then I went back to the studio, with no one else there, the minute I got back, and put a demo down of it. Did everything myself on it, and it was virtually complete in a day." - David Gilmour talking about "High Hopes" from the US radio premiere of The Division Bell with Redbeard, March, 1994.

It is also the very last song that Pink Floyd has written to date (and its placement at the end of their last album of new material to date) lends itself to the interpretation that the song narrates the story of the band's career, from their beginnings to their grandiose success (with The Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall) to their breakup to their carrying on. The final line ("The endless river, forever and ever") ties into one of the band's first hits, "See Emily Play" ("Float on a river, forever and ever").

Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series

What is a super car? A super car is something which have to have technologies that are far ahead of its time. It should have an intimidating looks and should make your jaw drop when you put your foot down by the sheer power and noise of it.

Well to be frank I was never that fond of Mercedes's super cars, I'm a Ferrari guy. The last Mercedes I adore was the 1955 300SL Gullwing, that car was a piece of art and had great racing history back in the 50s. It has a 3 liter straight 6, 4 speed manual which produces 215 bhp (218 PS) and 203 ft·lb (275.0 Nm) of torque, an all aluminum body shell, direct injection, independent suspension, coil springs and a kerb weight of 1293 kg. I know it might not sound that great now but it was the first production vehicle to break 150 mph barrier on road. So trust me on this guys its mind blowing.

OK now back to present. Few years back Mercedes gave us the McLaren Mercedes SLR which is also an astonishing super car but not completely a Benz because it was designed and developed by a British Formula 1 giant McLaren.

Finally after 53 years they came up with another, the SL 65 AMG Black Series. It has a 6 liter V12 turbocharged power plant which produces a staggering 661 bhp (670.2 PS) and 738 ft·lb (1000.0 Nm) of torque. Oh another thing, the carbon fiber dress it wear, allows the SL to reach 200 mph. Last but not the least the sheer looks and presence of it feels like a jolt of electricity shooting through your veins. If you don't believe me just take a look.

Eeeepee! we now have submarine cable and the bandwidth price will decrease. BTRC has slashed the domestic bandwidth charge by 60 percent to reach the internet facilities to the rural people, which will help alleviate poverty and ensure development.

"I still have to pay the same amount of monthly subscription fee and get the same crappy connection and they are talking about rural people, FUNNY."

Well after I heard this, which was almost 3 years ago, I thought finally opportunity will open up for freelancer and small software companies, who does outsourcing work. But as you can see 3 years has passed and only the big companies who can afford 10/15 MBPS connection are getting the benefits.

As you all know bandwidth price is a very big issue for small software companies. If you have a great idea of doing something you can't do it cause of money in this country and your government won't do anything about it. They will sanction loan to someone who already have heck lot of money but not to a guy who have a vision of doing something for him and his country. I know people who are rich and getting richer every day, thanks to the government.

Well government & people of this country think realistically for a minute - rural people needs food, shelter and want to stay alive they don't need internet, they want to survive. So think about the companies & individuals who can bring money in your country and help them, by doing that you also help the rural people.

Information Technology is the future and your country can really do good in this sector, look at India as an example, so help them every way you can. Make sure the price you implemented for bandwidth is actually carried out by the distributor and the bandwidth is not miss used in any illegal facility.

Losing my patience

Well for the last few days I was sure my 2nd hard drive will die and the inevitable has happened. I took this drive to the retailer 3 months ago cos I had doubts about it but they said its gonna be ok and now its dead with almost 300GB of data.

Its really f**ked up that whenever you buy something in this country you are bound to get f**ked by the retailers. Their moto is "customer is always wrong". I don't know if I'm going to hit the retailer when I go there cos I'm seriously losing my patience.

BAD PC, BAD PC

Well for the last 2 years or so I am really struggling with my PC. I mean in the meantime I have changed it twice every piece of it.

Tonight I came home from office and found out my on board LAN aint working "JUST FRICKIN GREAT" can't connect to net. Finally after 1 hour I fixed it, don't know for how long but I'm connected.

So before I get disconnected just wanted to say to you all never ever buy an ASUS motherboard cause my last 2 screwed me big time and I don't think its just bad luck. Also don't buy Hitachi hard drives no never.

Indian "Chandrayaan 1" orbiting Moon

After an 817 second burn from the engine last Saturday (8th Nov 2008), Chandrayaan 1 spacecraft is captured by the lunar gravity.

Launched on 22nd October 2008, Chandrayaan 1 mission was to capture the polar orbit of the moon and compile a 3D atlas of the lunar surface and map the distribution of elements and minerals.

The Indian spacecraft includes a 30kg MIP (Moon Impact Probe). It will be released from the spacecraft to slam into the lunar surface. On its way down it will record video footage and measure the composition of the Moon's tenuous atmosphere. The probe also carries an Indian flag which will be dropped on to the lunar surface.
